A weak tight end class in 2008 could give the Bills a chance to get stronger. Without a first-round lock, the top players at the position could fall into the second stage and perhaps even to the Bills’ 41st overall slot; grabbing a tight end if that happens would improve an embarrassingly obvious weakness for a team whose best current option could arguably be making Jason Peters tackle-eligible.
Their current lineup won’t cut it. The top players by quantity in 2007, Robert Royal and now-Lion Michael Gaines, each totaled 25 receptions; their amounts combined would have only ranked 10th-best in the league for a single tight end, and it turns out that NFL rules prohibit letting a duo compete for an individual honor.
