7-9 looks like a decent record for Bills in '09

Three seasons under Dick Jauron have resulted in 7-9, 7-9, 7-9 for the Buffalo Bills.

But if you take a gander at next year's schedule, a fourth straight season with that record might be an accomplishment.

Much to his fan base's consternation, Bills owner Ralph Wilson on Tuesday announced Jauron would be back in 2009. Wilson cited continuity as the chief reason, but if the Bills play their upcoming schedule with the same fervor as last season, they'll be in trouble.

As mentioned in a previous item I wrote about how the Miami Dolphins will face a significantly more daunting schedule in 2009, the AFC East will meet the AFC South and NFC South. That's four playoff teams. Nobody in the NFC South had a losing record.

The Bills, at least, won't face the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans like the first-place Dolphins will. Instead, the Bills will meet the Cleveland Browns (who beat them in Orchard Park, N.Y., this year) and the Kansas City Chiefs in their nonconforming games.

Buffalo at home: Indianapolis Colts (12-4), Dolphins (11-5), New England Patriots (11-5), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7), New York Jets (9-7), Houston Texans (8-8), New Orleans Saints (8-8), Browns (4-12).

Buffalo on the road: Tennessee Titans (13-3), Carolina Panthers (12-4), Atlanta Falcons (11-5), Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11), Chiefs (2-14), Dolphins, Patriots, Jets.

Buffalo finished with a losing record a fourth straight season even though the AFC East had an easy schedule. They went 0-6 in the division.

It played the AFC West and NFC West, divisions that produced a total of one winning record. Western divisions had a combined 45-83 record for a .352 winning percentage.
