TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fired coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen after the team collapsed following a 9-3 start and failed to make the playoffs.
Gruden, who helped lead the Buccaneers to a victory over the Oakland Raiders in the 2003 Super Bowl, was Tampa Bay's coach for seven years before being dismissed Friday. Allen was general manager for the last five seasons.
A source close to Gruden said the coach was "blindsided" but the move, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported.
The Buccaneers were tied for first place in the NFC South heading into December, but finished with losses to Carolina and Atlanta on the road and San Diego and Oakland at home, where they had been 6-0. One more win would have landed a NFC wild-card berth.
The 9-7 record this season left Tampa out of the playoffs for the fourth time in six years.
"We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise," Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer said in a statement. "However after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward."
Gruden had been the head coach of the Buccaneers for seven seasons, coming from the Oakland Raiders. His overall record with Tampa Bay is 57-55, but 22-26 over the past three seasons.

wow i'm shocked get him next year
While Gruden is a pretty good coach -- much better than our guy, obviously -- he's quite a bit overrated. He did a nice job in Oakland with oodles of talent, then went to Tampa Bay and won a Super Bowl. But he won it with an all-time great defense and a team Tony Dungy built and once those players aged and/or left, things with the Bucs were never the same again.
I would take Gruden here next year because anyone is an upgrade over our moron, but he's no better than most coaches. For instance, what makes Gruden better than, say, Eric Mangini -- whom I wanted here? Nothing, in my opinion.
People want to lump Gruden in with Shanahan, but Shanahan is far superior.
I don't agree. I mean, 57-55 in Tampa and 22-26 in his last three seasons is just not that impressive.
Again, he's much better than our guy. But I don't see Gruden as elite.

he brought the raiders to the SB the same year he won it, kinda. he got shafted with the tuck rule, also.
Good points. He was basically a .500 coach in Tampa, and that's taking over a Super Bowl quality team. Odd timing getting shitcanned, however.
He did a decent job with the Raiders.

I think Gruden is a career overrated coach....but he's still very good. It's amazing the coaching talent that's out there. We'll probably fire Jauron next year and then hire Romeo Crennel. Fuck you Ralph.
I was mildy surprised when I saw this on Sports Center. I'd take him here in a year as well. But I whole-heartedly feel that he always know's when the camera is on him, and therefore plays a part worthy of an Oscar nomination. He's an actor. He's obsessed with his own facial expressions. I think he even practices them in the mirror. It annoy's me greatly.
But like I said, go ahead and bring him on in. He's not a bad coach at all.
