The Oilers gave 25-year-old restricted free-agent defenseman Tom Gilbert, who's a good player, a six-year, $24 million contract Friday. Gilbert is coming off a 13-goal, 33-point campaign, which is certainly above average for a D-man, but $4 million per year after only one full season in the league? Come on. I guess Kevin Lowe has set the market for this year; enjoy paying JM Liles $5 million per year and Brian Campbell $8 mill annually, NHL teams.

yeah a bit more then i thought, but i think were gonna see teams start to overpay a bit with the hope they get value in the next 2 years. Everyone thought Roy was overpaid last year and it turned out to possibly be the biggest steal in the league IMO

How does Kevin Lowe expect to keep all his RFAs, and especially Pitkanen and Stoll? The Gilbert signing puts them over the cap for this year, even though the cap will be increasing. It's almost like he's daring Regier to drop an offer on one of them.
Very valid point. I was angry at Darcy for the Roy contract last summer; one year later, Roy is a bona fide No. 1 center.
He's probably going to have to unload someone like Raffi Torres, whom I'd be interested in.

It must suck to be Dion Pheneuf right about now. Well what he's making is obviously nothing to cry about, but he could have made so much more money. Calgary got a steal with him.

Gilbert will earn $3.5 million next season with a $1.5 million signing bonus, $3.5 million in 2009-2010, $5.5 million with a $1.5 million signing bonus in 2010-2011, $5 million in 2011-2012, $3.5 million in 2012-2013, and $3 million in 2013-2014 for a salary cap average of $4 million a season.
Nilsson will earn $1.5 million next season and $2 million in each remaining season.
By signing the deals, both players avoided becoming restricted free agents in July.
Gilbert, 25, had a solid campaign for the Oilers in 2007-08 with 13 goals and 20 assists over his 82 games.
Gilbert was acquired by the Oilers in a 2004 deal with the Colorado Avalanche. He was drafted by the Avalanche in the fourth round (129th overall) in 2002. Nilsson, 23, was part of the trade that send Ryan Smyth to the New York Islanfers last season. He scored 10 goals and 41 points with Edmonton in 2007-08.
