The Real Deal
I would say no, kind of smart actually. Total a-hole but hey i dont think there's a penalty for screening.

Very smart. Actually pretty funny.

I wish Scott Stevens still played for New Jersey. He would have made sure that Avery ended up as a stain on the ice.

Where's the rule that says he can't?
That's really just funny. If Kaleta turns into Sean Avery in 2-3 years, I will be psyched.
Avery can trip and die.
Hahaha, that was ridiculous. The only problem I have with it is his stick in Brodeur's face. There should be a rule against that, but since he never made contact, it can't really be called a high stick. He looked like he was defending against the pass or shot in a basketball game.
i was laughing pretty hard but it's unclalled for. it was poor sportsmanship
Thumper (04-14-2008)
Ron MacLean was vilifying Avery during intermission, saying how this should be a 10-minute misconduct. I don't agree at all. If Brodeur or another member of the Devils doesn't like it, then knock him on his ass. When you're in front of the net -- whether it's as a forward or a defenseman trying to stop a goal from being scored -- all's fair in war.
Officer Joseph J Whitestick (04-14-2008)
It would have been wonderful if one of those point shots hit Avery in the heel.
"An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule 75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play."

The reason nobody knocked him on his ass is because it was a 5-on-3. If someone goes out of the triangle to drill him, it's essentially a 4-on-2. It's what Avery wanted. To try to draw Brodeur and/or a defenseman into a penalty, or at least out of position for the Rangers to get an easy goal. It really was a no-win situation for New Jersey. Then again, in hindsight, the Rangers scored anyway, so I guess it wouldn't have mattered if someone got out of position to level the guy.
I don't know if I'd call it a penalty, but I can see where MacLean was coming from. You could put that under the category of taunting if you really wanted to nit-pick.

Now the NHL set up a rule against it. Dumb idea on the NHL's part. What harm is he doing? Distractions are part of the game.

Question: if this was anybody but Sean Avery, would we be having this discussion?
Maybe Chris Neil or Darcy Tucker, but I can't see it being a big deal if it was anybody else.
Would anybody else but those three players you named do something like this in the first place?

I don't know. I doubt Neil or Tucker would to be honest.

If Avery was a Sabre everyone would be loving it.
