Teppo wants to stay and other FAs

We talked below about Teppo Numminen's surprise words Monday that he's interested in playing for the Sabres next year. For the record, here's the list of other Sabres who are heading into free agency:

---Unrestricted -- Defenseman Dmitri Kalinin and Nolan Pratt, forward Michael Ryan and backup goaltender Jocelyn Thibault.

---Restricted -- Forwards Daniel Paille, Paul Gaustad, Steve Bernier and Clarke MacArthur.

The Sabres are expected to look into multi-year deals for Paille, Gaustad and Bernier and all three said Monday they'd be interested in working something out with the team. It's pretty certain the Sabres are not interested in Kalinin or Thibault.

    ---Mike Harrington

I'm all for giving Teppo a 1 year deal under 2 million.

I hope they get done with Paille, Goose and Bernier before July 1 gets here. I believe the FO has plans to get these young guys locked up. We have a solid foundation, one of the best in the NHL and easily the best in the NE Division.

Oh and I have no beef with keeping Teppo around. Let him help groom Weber and Sekera.

I just assumed let Teppo walk before last week, but the dedication and leadership he showed by coming back to play a meaningless game was something special. On top of that, he clearly had a calming influence on the rest of the defense; hell, they only allowed 17 shots.

Call me a sentimentalist, but I'm rooting for the return of No. 27 in 2008. Slap an 'A' on his chest, put him in the third pairing, and let's get this show on the road.

Someone, namely Lydman, would have to go in that scenario.

    Tallinder-Smith
    Weber-Sekera
    Spacek-Numminen

That would do. I'm a little wary of giving the two kids regular second-pairing assignments, but I think they're capable. By the end of the season they were each playing 20-25 minutes per game.

funny, i thought teppo was angry at how poorly the front office treated him, yet he wants to come back?

he'd better not teach weber to skate and smoke at the same time

The smoking and skating bit had me dying

Teppo impressed me Saturday, get him to stay. I'd really like to say bye to Lydman.

I really think Teppo's absence this year had a deep impact on our defense.

When he is out on the ice - this team plays better defense.

I hope he comes back for one more year with us.

See ya Kalinin and Mike Ryan (you waste).

Pratt you played your role...but I just don't see you fitting in with this team next year.

First time poster, looks like a very cool site.

Im all for keeping Teppo, even if its still at the 2.6. Ive always thought his absence may have hurt a little bit more then anyone else. He on the D just makes them click better and look more confident

He's a good PKer too. However, he isn't going to crack the Gaustad/Mair/Kaleta line, and he shouldn't be playing anything more than 4th line minutes.

What is everyone's fetish with keeping Weber and Sekera on the same pairing. I don't think it would be a disaster to split them. To be honest,
I think Sekera and Numminen would be a good pairing, as would Weber and Tallinder, as you are matching similar styles. Spacek and Lydman wouldn't be bad together.

I'm not completely confident that they are going to sign another defenseman, regardless of what is said today at 10am. This team has needed a physical defenseman for the past 3 years, and has yet to address the issue.

Teppo is definitely worth resigning. You could probably get him on the cheap due to his health problems this year. Hell, the guy could play another 5 years. Look at Chris Chelios - what is he, 50 years old now?

    Bring back Teppo!

Lydman has been infected by Smehlik disease, the same debilitating affliction that ruined Dmitri Kalinin. He needs to be replaced before he infects another defenseman.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Spacek gone. His play really tailed off again the second half of the year. I think they could do better for the money they're paying him.

Funny...A lot of you douche bags were pissed when Teppo was resigned LAST season. Now you all can't get him locked up for another year with the Sabres fast enough. Oh, what a sub-par year will do for perspective.

I was on that boat. That was mostly because we did nothing to improve our defense. If Sekera and Weber were up here (obviously not possible at that point) I would have been fine with it. Just a matter of doing something make our defense better.
