BC’s Gerbe could sign with Sabres..
The conquering hero of the Frozen Four either can return to Boston College for his senior season or can turn pro and join the Buffalo Sabres, who made the 5-5 dynamo a fifth-round pick in the 2005 draft.
“He’ll have to look at all the pluses both ways,” coach Jerry York said. “There are no minuses.”
“Either way it’s a great decision,” Gerbe agreed Monday night after finishing up a marathon autograph session following the national championship celebration at BC’s Conte Forum. “Coming back here you would grow as a kid and also develop as a player. If I do go pro, it’ll give me a great new environment to try to develop in.”
With five goals and three assists in the two games at the Frozen Four, including two scores in the 4-1 title-game victory over Notre Dame, Gerbe’s stock has never been higher. He wound up leading the nation in goals (35) and points (68), although he was denied the Hobey Baker Award.
For now, Gerbe said all he cared about was basking in the glow of BC’s third national title (1949, 2001). “I want to soak this in,” he said. “I don’t want to be worrying about something else and not be able to cherish this memory. It’s not something that I’m really focused on, but I certainly have a tough decision to make
