Pirates get a sneek peek into the future
Portland, ME – The Lewiston MAINEiacs will take on the Quebec Remparts for a pair of games at the Cumberland County Civic Center this weekend, beginning tonight at 7pm.

For the Portland Pirates faithful, when the Remparts take to the ice, they’ll be getting a glimpse into the future with promising prospect Jean-Simon Allard, who could possibly sign with the Sabres in the off-season and be in a Pirates jersey sometime next fall.

Pirates gain ground, but lose that winning feeling
Springfield, Mass. – At least it was a point, but that still doesn’t give much comfort to the Portland Pirates. After being held to just 11 shots after two periods of play, the Pirates would get a pair of special team goals from Nathan Gerbe and Marc-Andre Gragnani, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Springfield Falcons, prevailed in the shootout, for the 3-2 win on Friday night.

    Pirates sombre despite victory
Lowell, Mass. – Colton Fretter notched his first AHL hat-trick as the Portland Pirates gained a little payback on the Lowell Devils, winning, 5-2, at Tsongas Arena in front of 2,024 on Saturday night.

Despite Fretter’s achievement, the minds of everybody in the locker room was on the status of Mike Funk, who was hit from behind at 10:29 of the third period.

“You see this way too much in the NHL and down here, it doesn’t matter,” said Pirates forward Mathieu Darche. “League’s can do whatever they want as far a suspension, but at some point it’s up to the players to take action.”

“You just can’t run a guy like that from behind.”

No....When it happened, all eyes turned to Funk and his well-being. Any of the rough stuff would have been pointless, because of the seriousness of the situation.

    Pirates tripped up in Worcester
Worcester, Mass. – After earning five of a possible six points, the Pirates failed to earn a point tonight as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the hands of the Worcester Sharks at the DCU Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Sharks, like their parent club in San Jose, have been on a roll lately going 7-3-0 in their last 10 games.

Worcester would build a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play on goals by Derek Joslin and Jason Demers.

Third period push gave Pirates new life
Orono, ME – Not all wins are pretty, but they pay the same at the end of the day.

In a game the Portland Pirates needed for moral and confidence, they were more than glad to cash the check as they overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Manchester Monarchs, 4-3 in a shootout in front of 2,797 at Alfond Arena on the campus of the University of Maine.

“For game that was not the coach’s best friend,” said Dineen. “This game had a lot of personality to it.”

Pirates end road trip with no points
By Jon Campbell, Special to Maine Hockey Journal
ALBANY, N.Y. — Three games. Three goals. Three losses.

Ryan Weston scored the game-winning goal at the 3:01 mark of the third period, leading the Albany River Rats past the Portland Pirates, 3-1 on Sunday.

The Pirates managed to score just once in each of their last three games — all losses on the road.

I've been working on a long running series that started with MVN.com before I moved to Maine Hockey Journal, where I listed the top-10 moments in Pirates franchise history.

The last one is completed so here's the Top-10 moments in Portland Pirates history.

10.) Ebright saves hockey in Portland
Tom Ebright saved hockey in Portland after many thought it had died with the lost of the Mariners. He earns a spot in the Top-10 moments for his contributions to the City of Portland and hockey fans all across Maine.
9.) Pirates look within to eliminate Bruins
The Portland Pirates need more than a scoring touch to beat the Providence Bruins. Down 0-2 in the series, the Pirates dug down to their inner core, prevailing in one of the most exciting series match-ups of all time.
8.) Pirates' Brochu wows the crowd in Binghamton
Martin Brochu was a special goaltender, making his mark on Portland Pirates history and establishing himself as one of the all-time great AHL goaltenders.
7.) Pirates set a franchise record for the quickest two goals in a period
During the 1996-1997 season, the Portland Pirates faced a number of challenges, but they stared down adversity all season long, in the process setting the franchise record for the quickest-two goals in franchise history.
6.) Pirates put up a dozen on the Bruins
It was a game in which the Pirates were in a dogfight for the Northern Division. Only five points behind the Adirondack Red Wings, Portland put the pedal down trying to catch the divison leader. Too bad the Bruins were in the way.
5.) Boback rolls a seven in Albany
The Pirates first season in Portland was very magical for many reasons, but Mike Boback added more script to the Pirates lore with an amazing game in Albany as Portland eliminated the River Rats from the playoffs.
4.)Pirates and Bears engage in epic battle
Sometimes the villain can also turn out to be hero and vice versa. During the 2006 Eastern Conference Finals, some believed that Shane O’Brien could have been the villain, but if it wasn’t for his play in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Hershey Bears – a team already up 2-0 in the series – the Pirates might have been looking at a much shorter series than what turned out to be an epic seven game battle.
3.) Hulst and Kolzig put Pirates in the driver’s seat
Behind an amazing 49-save performance from Pirates’ goaltender Olaf Kolzig, Kent Hulst scored 81 seconds into the second overtime to give the Pirates a 2-1 win, putting a stranglehold on the best-of-seven Calder Cup Finals, 3-1, against the Moncton Hawks.
2.) Pirates set North American record
It’s hard to believe that 15 years ago, the Portland Pirates were sitting atop the sports world.

In a time when ESPN2 was in its infancy and the internet was beginning to boom, the Portland Pirates became a daily topic of news on SportsCenter and water cooler talk across North America.
    1.) Ebright keeps his promise
Portland, ME – When the late Tom Ebright brought his AHL team to Portland from Baltimore, Maryland, he stood on the steps of city hall in front of a handful of hockey faithful in attendance and made two promises.

He promised to bring respectability and prominence back to the Civic Center – something that was non-existent for several years under the Maine Mariners – and he said he would make the newly named Portland Pirates a championship caliber team.

As Ebright’s legacy endures in Maine, it’s become very clear that not only did he keep his promises, but also, he didn’t waste much time in making those promises come true.

Something fans of the Portland Pirates will never forget.

Pirates hope Santa brings a little offense
Portland, ME – With the holiday season upon us, it can be assured the Portland Pirates are hoping to find a few more goals in their stockings and a little less coal, especially as the new year and the heart of the season quickly approaches.

The Pirates, for the second time this season, have lost three straight games as they’ve sputtered to a grinding halt offensively, and now find themselves embroiled in an Atlantic Division battle that at the beginning of the season looked it could be over by Christmas.

Now, it looks like it will last until the last day of the season and Portland may or may not be apart that race, but again, it depends on Portland over the rest of the season.

    Pirates infirmary continues to grow
The Pirates were back on the ice hard at work today getting ready for a weekend series of games that may define the rest of their season. With a road on Friday in Worcester before returning to the 4-C’s for the first time in almost three weeks with a pair of games against the P-Bruins and Sharks, the Pirates have to figure out a way to snap out of the goal scoring funk they find themselves in.

However, they had to do so without a couple of bodies Mike Funk and Mike Card are still out with concussion symptoms. Adam Dennis didn’t skate this morning, as Dineen wanted to be cautious with his goalie. Dineen said Dennis has been dealing with a few things and they just want to keep a close eye on the situation. Also missing was Aaron Slattengren who didn’t skate for the second straight day.

Tonight’s Pirates game postponed; Tarkir joins Portland
Pirates head coach Kevin Dineen has signed defenseman Zach Tarkir from South Carolina to a PTO because of injuries and call ups to the Sabres within the last day. Tarkir, 24, has played in 22 games with the South Carolina Stingrays, scoring 10 points (2g, 8a) with 27 penalty minutes. He also has a plus-12 rating, which is good enough for third in the ECHL.

Home cooking puts Pirates back in win column
Portland, ME – Nothing like a little home cooking to help cure all that ails.

Four different players each had multiple points on the night as the Portland Pirates broke a three game losing streak by beating the Providence Bruins, 4-2, in front of 5,069 at the Cumberland County Civic.

The Pirates returned to the Civic Center for the first time since Nov. 30 after spending more than three weeks on road, a stretch in which they went 2-4-0-1 over the last seven games.

Pirates head to their holiday break on a positive note
Portland, ME -- Jhonas Enroth made 41 saves and Marek Zagrapan scored the game-winning midway into the third period as a few hundred fans braved the elements to watch the Portland Pirates come back from a two goal deficit to beat the Worcester Sharks, 3-2, at the Cumberland County Civic Center on a snowy Sunday afternoon.

It was the second time this weekend the Sharks and Pirates were affected by weather, but Worcester traveled to Portland last night after they play at home against Manchester.

Bad luck continues for the Pirates
Manchester, NH – If the Portland Pirates didn’t have bad luck, they’d have no luck at all.

After being on a holiday break for nearly a week, missed opportunities and mounting injuries continue to haunt the Pirates on Saturday as the Manchester Monarchs held on for a 3-2 win in front 5,606 at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Newcomers provide the Pirates a much-needed lift
Portland, ME – With all the players that are either in Buffalo with the Sabres or recuperating from injuries, the door has been opened for someone to have an opportunity. The Portland Pirates have four players that began the season on an ECHL roster and they’d make the most of it as part of 12 different players who contributed on offense in a 7-1 shellacking of the Worcester Sharks at the Civic Center on Sunday afternoon.
