Pirates not prepared for Worcester’s comeback

Worcester, Mass. – Last night, the Portland Pirates handed the Worcester Sharks their worst defeat of the season. Tonight, the Sharks made sure they weren’t going to be embarrassed in front of the 3,119 at the DCU Center as they beat Portland 3-2 in a game that was rescheduled from Dec. 19 due to weather.

It only took Worcester 1:31 into the period to score as Lukas Kaspar put a wrist shot by Pirates’ goalie Jhonas Enroth from the top of the left face off circle. Portland didn’t have many chances in the period to even the score, being outshot 16-6 for the first 20 minutes.

Pirates bid adieu to 2008 with a victory
Portland, ME – The power play came through for the Portland Pirates when they needed it most to end 2008 on a positive note with a 2-1 win over the Norfolk Admirals in front of a near sell-out crowd of 6,374 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Wednesday evening.

At 14:09 of the second period, with the Admirals up 1-0, Portland tied the game on a Mark Mancari’s 13th goal of the season.

Going into the game, the Pirates were 4-for-48 with the man advantage, as it’s become a point of concern for the coaching staff of the Pirates.

"It's pretty obvious that it’s a big issue for us right now, said Pirates head coach Kevin Dineen. “The power play goal wasn't a thing of beauty or a set play, but a lot of effort that made the difference."

Old Pirate comes back to haunt former team
Portland, ME – Nathan Gerbe and Aaron Slattengren returned to the lineup tonight for the Portland Pirates, but it didn’t help them on the scoreboard as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Norfolk Admirals in front of 4,511 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night.

It was the Admirals first win against the Pirates this season and their first at the CCCC since Feb 24, 2008.

Former Pirate Mike McKenna was a game-changer for the Admirals, making 34 saves on 36 shots, earning the first star of the game.

Pirates ground the Falcons in Portland
Portland, ME – The Springfield Falcons woes were the Portland Pirates gain as they handled the Falcons, 3-1, before a Sunday crowd of 2,693 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

It was the Pirates first win of 2009 and a win they really needed to remove the sour taste of Saturday night’s game against the Norfolk Admirals.

Portland, ME – When the AHL announces their roster for the Planet USA All-Star’s, the Portland Pirates will have two names on it, which shouldn’t be a surprise.

As expected Nathan Gerbe and Tim Kennedy will join Mark Mancari in Worcester, Mass. which takes place at the end of January.

Pirates can’t catch a break on the road
Lowell, Mass. – The road has become an unfriendly place for the Portland Pirates, losing their seventh straight game, 3-2, to the Lowell Devils in front of a sparse crowd of 1,110 at Tsongas Arena on a snowy Wednesday night.

It was the first time this season, the Pirates would drop a game when leading after the second period. Prior to the loss, Portland had gone 16-0-0 when leading after two periods of play.

    Pirates burned by the Devils
Portland, ME – It was another tough night for the Portland Pirates, who dropped their second game in a row to the Lowell Devils, 5-3, in front of 3,491 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Friday night.

Since Nov. 19 when the Pirates began the season 12-1-1, they’ve gone 8-13-0-2 and have only managed to win back-to-back games once during that span.

“We’ve tried to get cute lately,” Pirates’ forward Mathieu Darche. “We get scored on and we get frustrated and it snowballs from there.”

A much-needed win for the Pirates
Portland, ME – It was a step in the right direction for the Portland Pirates, but they know there is still more work to be done.

Mathieu Darche had four points on the night en route to a 5-2 victory over the Springfield Falcons before 4,839 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Last night, the Pirates were left reeling from a 7-3 defeat to the Lowell Devils and with the Providence Bruins having the night off, it was a much-needed game for the team’s confidence.

“We talked last night and talk is cheap if you don’t back it up,” said Darche.

Power play faulters in Pirates loss
Portland, ME – The Portland Pirates have had their ups and downs for much of the season, and lately they’ve seen more down moments.

In the second of back-to-back games with the Springfield Falcons, Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves in a 4-1 win over the Pirates in front of 3,978 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
