The Sabres went from winning the NHL's Presidents' Trophy to becoming the third team all-time to miss the playoffs the next season. Meanwhile, the Senators downward spiraled from Eastern Conference champion to a No. 7 seed and first-round sweep, even after beginning the year an unprecedented 13-1-0 and holding the East's top spot at the all-star break.
The question: Who should be more ashamed?
I'll go with the Senators, who won as many playoff games as golf course-bound Buffalo. They had much higher expectations; the main regret I have these days is that the 2006-07 Sabres weren't the 2007-08 Sabres. The East playoffs are wide open this spring; there isn't an '06-07 Sens team standing in the way of conference supremacy.
