Spikes did not see much action as a freshman, finishing the season with just 15 tackles. He broke through in a big way last year, leading the Gators with 131 tackles, 16 for loss, and 1.5 sacks on his way to All SEC honors. His numbers weren’t quite as impressive as a junior, but he still had a fantastic season in 2008. Spikes finished the year with 87 tackles, eight for loss, two sacks, and four interceptions(two returned for touchdowns).
Strengths
Spikes can do it all from his linebacker position. He is a physical linebacker with good size and excellent instincts. He is quick to diagnose the action and aggressively attacks the ball carrier. He has the size to take on blocks and the strength to disengage and make the play. Spikes also shows the speed to get to the perimeter and run plays down. He also shows excellent awareness in coverage, keeping himself in position to make a play on the ball and receiver. He may even have the versatility to play a strong side OLB spot for some teams.
Weaknesses
Spikes is not the physical freak that will blow you away with any individual tool. He is not a phenomenal athlete and does not have blazing speed. He is not lacking in any area, and any deficiency here is tearing apart his game.
Future
Spikes is a complete linebacker and one of many linebackers that should draw first round consideration in April. This is a very deep draft for linebackers period, and there are three potential standouts at middle linebacker. Depending on who you talk to, you may hear Rey Maualuga, James Laurinaitis, or Spikes mentioned as the top ILB available. Spikes may not wow people with one tool, but his ability to stop the run and make plays in coverage should make him an excellent NFL linebacker.
