July 8, 2008 - Being named IGN's Sports Game of the Year is tough for a series. It puts a lot of pressure on the next title to live up to its now-celebrated name. To do that, developers must think of new ideas that push gameplay beyond something that was considered to be at the top of its class. Such is the case with NHL 09, a hockey title that must surpass a game that saw a complete redesign to its more than ten-year old shooting mechanic, as well as a host of other series-changing features. Judging from my limited hands-on time, it appears that it's well on the way to living up to heightened expectations.More...But that makes landing the perfect breakout play oh-so-sweet. NHL 09 not only allows you to design your own plays, but you can now send players on streaking routes up the ice. Perform a flip dump directly into his path and you'll be presented with the opportunity to make the defense look foolish with the new one-handed deke moves. Holding the proper button when you have the puck performs a stiff arm of sorts on one side while stick side governs the puck. NHL 09 also allows players to push the puck along as a kind of a speed burst. Players skate faster without the puck so the longer you can skate without it while still keeping it in front of you, the quicker you'll get down the ice.
