Something in the speaker system in the back of an SUV caught a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer's attention this weekend and it wasn't the music that was playing.
A look inside discovered a woman who was allegedly being smuggled across the Rio Grande by her husband.
CBP officers says Christopher Sean Protho, 36, of Fort Worth, was driving across the B&M International Bridge on Sunday afternoon when officers discovered Protho's wife hidden inside a speaker box behind the backseat of his 1995 Honda Odyssey.
The speakers were wired and playing when Protho's 33-year-old wife was found.
Protho was arrested on felony alien smuggling charges. He remains behind bars. His wife, who is from Matamoros, remains in federal custody and will be returned to Mexico.
"CBP officers routinely find narcotics hidden in a vehicle, but in this case, it was the driver's wife. This was a great detection by Brownsville CBP officers," said Michael Freeman, CBP Port Director, Brownsville Port of Entry.
The couple's SUV was confiscated.
