Obama to Grant Gay Partners Benefits

WASHINGTON (June 17) - President Barack Obama, whose gay and lesbian supporters have grown frustrated with his slow movement on their priorities, is extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees, a White House official said.

Obama plans to announce his decision Wednesday in the Oval Office, the official said Tuesday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the president hadn't yet signed the presidential memorandum.

This can so easily be abused. What defines gays and lesbians in "civil unions" in states where gay marriage isn't legal yet? Simply living together? If that were the case, roommates could take part in this. And when it's found out that some girl comes over and sleeps with one of them, they could play this card: "cheating with the opposite sex is necessary for our relationship". That's what I would do.

All I'm saying is that they had better define some serious ground rules for this. I imagine they will, but who knows?

Any healthcare program that offers benefits to a significant other can be abused.

Heterosexual partners can do the same exact thing.

I know a lot of elderly couples who remarried later in life strictly for health benefits.

But God forbid those evil gheys get benefits for their partners.

I'm not even necessarily arguing against this. It's more about wanting some ground rules and definitions set first. If they aren't defined, heterosexual couples, who aren't married, are going to want these benefits as well and "well, if you're heterosexual, you have to be married, but if you're a homosexual, you don't have to be" isn't going to fly.

I understand. And from what you're saying, I think that makes it even more important that gays have some legally binding way to "validate" their relationship in order to obtain said benefits.

There's more implications than that just the state obtaining a marriage license and a fee for it. I keep bringing up taxes because I work in the profession, but the rules for joint filing would get completely thrown out of whack. That's just one example.

An easier solution is to limit benefits to married couples and let homos get married.

Of course, Obama is also supporting DOMA like a jackass.
