There's still a legal, lawful, bind there though, for tax purposes among other things. With the homosexuals, there's no such bind, not yet anyway.
I'm not even necessarily arguing against this. It's more about wanting some ground rules and definitions set first. If they aren't defined, heterosexual couples, who aren't married, are going to want these benefits as well and "well, if you're heterosexual, you have to be married, but if you're a homosexual, you don't have to be" isn't going to fly.
