    buffalo, literally the shortest commute

    http://www.bizjournals.com/buffalo/s...d=lfn&ana=test

Traffic flows more smoothly in Buffalo than in any other major U.S. metropolitan area, according to a new report from the Texas Transportation Institute.

The typical driver in Erie and Niagara counties spent a total of 11 hours stuck in rush-hour traffic in 2007, based on estimates released by the institute on Wednesday. That's the lowest figure for the 43 major metros -- those with populations above 1 million -- included in the report.

The nation's most congested metro is Los Angeles, where the typical driver suffered cumulative traffic delays of 70 hours in 2007. Runners-up in the congestion derby are Washington (annual delays of 62 hours per driver), Atlanta (57 hours), Houston (56 hours) and San Francisco-Oakland (55 hours).

Joining Buffalo as the only metros where individual drivers wasted less than 20 hours in traffic in 2007 are Cleveland (12 hours), Kansas City (15 hours), Pittsburgh (15 hours) and Milwaukee (18 hours).

The institute estimates that the typical Buffalo driver wasted seven gallons of gasoline last year because of congestion, also the lowest figure for any major metro. The corresponding figure for a Los Angeles driver was 53 gallons.

The Texas Transportation Institute, which is based in College Station, Texas, is an agency of Texas A&M University. It is considered one of the nation's preeminent centers of transportation research.

I always get hounded for this...I don't care if we have the shortest rush hour. I want it shorter. 95% of the time rush hour traffic has one major cause...stupidity.

Rochester's is right now. The main East-West interstate is undergoing some heavy construction. But under normal circumstances I'd say Rochester would be right near this number if they had 1 million metro.

    Unfortunately that's not always true.
