Thread: GPS advice

So, for those that know more about these devices than I do (which is pretty easy), what is the best one?

I am not looking for anything fancy. Nothing with subscription fees, but I do want it to say the street names.

Does it come with the necessary accessories? The guy at Radio Shack (note: I will not buy it there, this was only for information. I hate Radio Shack) made it sound like I have to buy the data card and the part that updates the card.

How often should I update it? Is it is as easy as plugging the card into my PC and letting it update itself?

What else do I need to know?

Get Garmin. It's the best GPS when it comes to routes. You shouldn't need to update the maps but maybe every 3 years.

Also some cellular devices come with built in gps. My sprint phone had it, and I loved it. I only used it once but it was certainly a nice security blanket.

Got me a Garmin 255. It seems to be good enough for me. Not the fanciest model, but it has a 4.3 in screen and verbalizes the street names and turns. No lane suggestions though.

I just put Telenav on my blackberry...it rocks!

It worked pretty well. There was a little confusion because of construction and a recent change to a road that now has a no left turn sign at the end (It wanted me turn left)

The construction was the best part. The map showed me foruwheeling it in the terrain.

Now that I know how to use it and some of the little things (look at it, just don't rely on the voice) I do like it.
